Making a Test Drive Useful

A test drive is an opportunity to assess a particular vehicle, not a competition between performance claims. Agree the route and arrangements with the dealership, then spend a few minutes adjusting your position and learning the controls before moving away.

Choose a route that helps you evaluate the use you have in mind. Ordinary acceleration, braking, junctions and parking can tell you about comfort and visibility without aggressive manoeuvres. Obey the road conditions and ask the team to demonstrate unfamiliar functions in an appropriate setting.

Listen to the car with the audio system off for part of the drive. Note vibrations, warning messages or noises that need explanation. A brief drive cannot establish the full mechanical condition, so use those observations to guide a professional inspection and a review of maintenance records.

Afterwards, write down what you liked and what remained uncertain before driving another vehicle. Comparing notes is more reliable than comparing a vague first impression. If you shortlist several cars, use their stock numbers to keep your questions and inspection findings attached to the correct listing.
