Battery Electric, Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid: Know the Difference

The word electric can describe several different powertrains. A battery-electric vehicle stores energy in a battery that is charged from an external supply. A conventional hybrid combines an engine and an electric system, while a plug-in hybrid also allows its battery to be charged externally.

Those differences change the questions to ask before buying. For a plug-in vehicle, investigate compatible charging where you park and along the routes you use. For any used electrified vehicle, ask what inspection has been carried out and what service information is available for the exact model.

Do not infer the charging arrangement from the presence of a battery or an electric motor. Check the manufacturer information and the individual car. A vehicle that cannot plug in should not be compared with a battery-electric car as though their refuelling routines were identical.

Start with your driving and parking needs, then shortlist the appropriate type. Keep purchase price, condition, support and practical charging access in the discussion. If the website has no available vehicles in a fuel category, contact the team about your requirements rather than assuming another category is interchangeable.
